THE FOUR ELEMENTS

for mezzo/flute (Air)
mezzo/violin (Earth)
mezzo/clarinet (Water)
mezzo/cello (Fire)
+ live electronics

The elements of nature are put into sound in four movements for mezzo-soprano and soloist; an important part is played by the electronics. The musical material is based on solos from Wim Henderickx’s work for music theatre VOID (2007).

The honest AIR for mezzo-soprano and flute seeks to evoke purity and a higher concsciousness. The two voices set out as a rustle, turn to tonality, only to disappear again in a rustle.
In the energetic FIRE, electronics represent the wood on which the duo of the mezzo and cello flare up as music.
The burbling WATER for mezzo, clarinet and electronics is structured as a circle and thus suggests an infinite continuum.
The pure but also raw EARTH for violin and mezzo is carried by electronic sound bursts of stones that are struck against each other. EARTH represents a foundation, a rigid, static basis.
