OM

string quartet no. 1

This work was composed in 1992 in commission of BAP - Sabam.

Each part passes attacca into the next. The whole composition has a mysterious, mystical, intangible character.

The basic theme of this composition is the mystical Sanskrit sound (om) of Hindu origin, which Eastern munks recite and repeat in their prayers and singing.
The composer combined this tone (our Cis-tone) with 4 other tones which (F, G, As, C) - in the Eastern tradition - would have a healing force.
This consonant group of notes was the germ cell of this composition which has a meditative atmosphere, also because of the soft gradations and the homogeneous timbre with the typical mixture of sound colours of the instruments.

The work is partly aleatorical. The exact metrical notation was replaced by an indication in real time to seperate periods from each other.  Within these spaces of time the musicians can play fairly freely.
