OBOE CONCERTO (EMPTY MIND I)

for oboe, orchestra and electronics

OBOE CONCERTO (EMPTY MIND I) was commissioned by the Royal Flemish Philharmonic (deFilharmonie) in 2014.
It was Wim Henderickx's first commission as ARTIST IN RESIDENCE with this orchestra.

In this series, Wim Henderickx also composed EMPTY MIND I for OBOE & ELECTRONICS, which was commissioned by ChampdAction. This work premiered in Lausanne in Switzerland in March 2014. Both compositions were inspired by the minimalist work of the late Agnes Martin.
In 2015 Henderickx made a version of this work for RECORDER & ELECTRONICS.

The oboe soloist can move around in the performance space and the orchestra's string players should preferably, and unusually, be scattered among the audience. The electronics play a crucial role in this work.

Wim Henderickx is here trying to tread new and audacious paths with a symphonic orchestra.

OBOE CONCERTO (Empty Mind I) has 6 parts (5 + 1), which may be played in any order. The composer's main objective was to try something different regarding time and space. He combined an open form (where the order of the different parts can be freely chosen) and a closed form (with a clearly defined score). In each section there is a strictly composed passage that displays a continuity between the parts, and a number of free passages in which the soloist can improvise with the material. A strictly composed melody is repeatedly interrupted by these free elements in which the oboist can use extended techniques such as multiphonics, glissandi, etc.

The electronics consist of a harmonic drone (a tapestry of sound) in the different layers. On the other hand, the sound of the oboe is manipulated in real time, which creates an incredibly rich harmonic spectrum, based solely on the sound of this solo instrument.

As a result of the spatialisation (using geomectric patterns) the sound will fill the entire space. This spatial effect will be enhanced by performing the successive parts in different areas of the performance space.

Parts:
I: Awakening
II: Without desires
III: Ecstasy
IV: Contemplation
V: Secret glance
Epilogue
