for 10 wind instruments
MYSTERIUM for woodwinds was commissioned by the ‘Nieuw Belgisch Kamerorkest' in 1989 and was honoured with the Composition Prize for Contemporary Music, Flanders-Quebec (Canada) in 1993.
The composition contains 3 parts Creation, Earth and Eternity and was inspired by the following texts (free translation from Dutch) :
‘Till there the eye does not reach,
The tongue does not reach,
Neither the thinking,
We do not know.'
We do not understand (from the Upanishads)
'The minute you talk about it,
You are already on the wrong track’. (ZEN)
The first part 'Creation' exists from 7 parts representing the 7 days of the book Genesis.
The second part 'Earth' is a reproduction of the “Dance of Shiva” and exists from 5 parts with an obsessive rhythm.
The third part 'Eternity' is a very free aleatoric structure with as a culmination point the Bach-choral ‘Von Himmel hoch, da komm ich her’.
