string quartet no 2
IN DEEP SILENCE III (Impression on a Theme from Haydn) was commissioned by the Flemish Festival der Voorkempen in 2003.
This composition is the third in a series of intimate works for chamber ensemble in which silence has been an important source of inspiration. This work was inspired by Haydn's Kaiser Quartet.
In 2017 Wim Henderickx made a version for STRING ORCHESTRA, commissioned by the Boho Strings and conductor David Ramael. It was recorded on the full CD 'Nostalgia'.
In 2020 he made a version for 5 VIOLA DA GAMBA for Hathor Consort.
In Deep Silence III consists of three parts. Each part is based on a detail from the theme of Haydn's work. It is a personal comment that is intended to go further than just a straightforward variation on the theme.
In the first part, the melody is played by the first violin and the violoncello in high flageolet tones, creating an ethereal atmosphere.
The second part is a lament with the viola playing the melody.
In the third part, a static, harmonic foundation is laid down, while the first violin plays the melody.
The free (aleatoric) notation ensures that each musician is given the opportunity for individual interpretation.
