for guitar solo
IN DEEP SILENCE I was commissioned by the Tromp Music Concours in Eindhoven (The Netherlands) in 1998.
It is the first in a series of intimate works for chamber music where silence has been an important source of inspiration. The poetic, nearly impressionist atmosphere is characteristic for these works.
This work consists of 9 parts that merge into one another without interruption. Various guitar techniques are integrated without, however, looking for mere effects.
In certain passages the influence of traditional Spanish music is noticeable, such as the Flamenco music. At other times, a major source of inspiration has certainly been the sound world of Japanese contemporary music and Zen philosophy.
The composer did try to compose as idiomatically as possible for the guitar with its extremely refined sound possibilities.
