THE QUEEN WITHOUT A COUNTRY was commissioned by Muziektheater Transparant. The text is from Paul Verrept's eponymous book. The premiere at the 'Zomer van Antwerpen' Festival in August 2014 was followed by 15 performances in a wonderful location near Antwerp and in 2014-2015 it went on tour.
This gripping story deals with the human condition. Wim Henderickx gave the singers no text, only a wordless language. The words spoken by the Flemish actress Marie Vinck were recorded and used as voice-over. Four singers, two percussionists and the electronics by Jorrit Tamminga created intoxicating ritual music.
It is a family production (from 8 years) with music that is understandable and stimulating. Ethereal, melodic passages alternate with rhythmically driving and ethnically-inspired music.
In this production the composer worked with the director Wouter Van Looy (Muziektheater Transparant) for the second time, see also VOID (2007).
