THE NEW RING

for mixed choir (optional electronics)

This work for mixed choir was commissioned by Het Muziektheater Amsterdam / De Nederlandse Opera in 2013 on the occasion of performances of Wagner's 'Der Ring des Nibelungen' at De Nederlandse Opera in Amsterdam.

The first part - de Aarde (the Earth) - was inspired on the first part from Wagner's Ring, Das Reingold. The text in this part consists of individual vowels and consonants.

The second part - de Mens (Man) - for soprano solo and female choir must be sung bocca chiusa. An ethnically-inspired melody by the soprano solo is supported by a retained harmonious chord in the choir. This part ends as a supplication, a litany.

The third part - de Boom (the Tree) - for mixed choir starts with a rhythmically repeated, minimalist motive. The middle section has slow arpeggios (broken chords) and after a recurring rhythmic passage the work ends with some chords resounding from afar (lontano). In this section, there's a meaningful text sounding intelligible.

This choral work can preferably be performed with electronics.
